Pausing during playback

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: pmerrill
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: Playback Version: 1.0b3.1
Keywords: Cc:

Description

I get pausing and skipping during playback. I am playing from a network share. I have eliminated codec problems (plays fine from ATV Files and NitoTV). Also, sapphire plays the files fine when stored locally on the ATV. The same files play fine from ATV Files or NitoTV when played from the network. NitoTV does have chaching, don't know about ATV Files. The problem is not consistent at the same point in a file but it does not usually happen until 5-10 minutes into a file. The ATV is wired and the switch is a hp that support QOS and I have QOS enabled between the ATV and the computer hosting the share.

  • Owner set to pmerrill
  • Status changed from new to assigned
  • Component changed from Other to Playback

If you play streamed files such as WMV & MKV QuickTime? will allow you to start playing the file before it has been fully imported. If the file is located on a remote share, it will most likely skip UNTIL the import of the file is complete. You can select the file & then pause it to let the import finish. You will know the import is complete once the QuickTime? widget shows a full blue bar.

Improvement on playback might be looked at in the future.

I get similar playback pauses with a xvid avi file streamed from a samba share via wifi. it worked fine when streaming to my xbox360 over wifi. i also think it played fine in the older version of Sapphire.

I am also seeing the same issue with xvid avi file being streamed wireless 802.11n via Airport Extreme from NAS via sharity-light using samba on 1.0b4. I used the same connection method when using 1.0b3, without any glitches, same network configuration and location of router and appletv. For some reason it only started happening to me after the upgrade to 1.0b4.

shlite sucks, horribly. It wastes CPU and a bunch of other things.

b4 didn't change its playback method.

I haven't had a problem with b4.2 using the same sharity-light and smb configuration over wireless after upgrading. I am considering using the mount_smbfs, just need to get around to all the kextloading. Too busy watching movies through this great plugin! This issue is currently resolved for me though.

I am having similar issues getting media over the network, I have an AFP share on a NAS server (FreeNAS). I do not have a comparison point with an older version of Sapphire because my aTV is a new purchase, I do have XBMC installed on a modded xbox also to stream media (though is is by SMB not AFP) and doing a comparison of the bandwidth used by this Sapphire and the xbox, I am getting around 1.5 mbps to stream to the xbox which is what I would expect given that the files are encoded at 1500 kbps when streaming to the aTV with Sapphire I am getting bandwidth usages around 3 mbps for so far as I can tell the duration of the video. I do not know what is accounting for the massively higher bandwidth usage streaming to the aTV but it would seem this would contribute to pause, skip, etc issues by coming much closer to saturating the availible bandwidth.

Hi

I also see skipping within the movies, and assume this is due to low buffer settings, if I use Mplayer from nito, I dont get these issues.

Issues are also limited (but not totally eliminated) when connecting appletv via cable.

Any chance buffer settings could be tweaked?

Regards, Benjamin

If you know how to change the buffer settings within Quicktime, then patches are welcome
