Description

I am using Sapphire 1.0b7p6 on AppleTV OS 2.4. When I attempt to play .AVI video files containing only MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 44.1kHz audio, I do not get any audio at all. NitoTV plays these files correctly, however.

Note: this problem seems to be intermittent, as sound is now working on these same video files with MP3 audio track. I will collect and post console data next time problem occurs.

OK. I was just able to reproduce this problem.

1. Console.log- not logging. Tried restarting Finder, still nothing recent in log.

2. File information: - Container format: AVI - Info on the file from VLC:

  • Stream 1:

Type: Audio Codec: a52 Channels: 3F2R/LFE Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate: 448 kb/s

  • Stream 0:

Type: Video Codec: XVID Resolution: 640x360 Display Resolution: 640x360 Frame Rate: 29.970030

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

That's not MP3; it's AC3. Either you don't have a complete Perian installation, since it includes an AC3 decoder, or you cannot play passthrough correctly. First check your Perian installation, and if that's fine, try turning off the AC3 passthrough setting in Sapphire's settings.

Marking as invalid as I believe that the above will resolve the issue, in which case this is not a bug in Sapphire. If that is not the case, reply and please include what Sapphire shows as the file info (shown in the preview on the left side of the screen).

1. Checked Perian installation, appears to be installed properly. Tried reinstalling and no change.

2. Tried turning off AC3 passthrough and no change.

3. As for Perian/AC3 passthrough being the problem, other AC3 files seem to work just fine using Sapphire / AC3 passthrough on my receiver. This problem is only with certain files and it is intermittent- there are times it will play the audio on those same problem files just fine.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can check.

In that case, I'm going to need the file for further testing.

I tried to find a relatively small video to post as an example. You can find it here:  http://vikram-rao.com/problem_video.avi

This video shows "A52 codec, Stereo" in VLC player. It plays fine in VLC player on my mac, but I've only rarely gotten audio on the file from Sapphire on my ATV. This is one of the files that exhibits the problem intermittently- more often than not, it has no sound on Sapphire. Thanks for looking into this!

No matter how much I skip through this video, it's audio never cuts out.

I would say the problem is either some other Perian (though unlikely), QuickTime? component, or QuickTime? itself. Whichever it is, it is not Sapphire's fault.
