Description

Hi folks,

Im from Germany and surely most of my Movies are ripped from German DVDs. And the titles are surely in German too.

Would it be possible to add support for German files too ? imdb.de seems to work the same that imdb.com

So: when switching sapphire to a German interface, it would be kind of normal to look up Movies rather at imdb.de, would it not ?

This is a feature request for ATV and Leopard version. German support for TV Shows is not requested.

Kind regards, KeyJ Phade

Support for alternative importers seems to be a more and more popular request.

Graham, if you think it's a good idea I'll have a go at generalising the interface for movie import which could make adding patches for new importers an easy task.

This is something I'm never going to use so I'm not going to do it.

Patches welcome

It seems that my main problem is, that Imn running Snow Leopard as US-Version. Sapphire seem to think now, that I want a english interface and english movie descriptions.

So I would love a switch in the setting section to change the "preferred language" to switch everything to German.

Kind regards, Phade

If your preferred language is Englsh then Sapphire will be in English. To get Sapphire in German your international language setting in the system preference pane must be German.

"I" love to work in english (mostly because german computer descriptions and terms are kind of stupid), so work should be english, but entertainment still in German. My Family surely wants it in German too and I have German DVDs with German titles. So please, put a simple switch in the settings menu to switch it to a different language even when the OS is running in English. Default after installation surely still should be whatever the OS says.

Even a phone, you TV or whatever else entertainment machine has that, so it should be really up to the user ...

and it would still love a simple menu called "preferred import from" where you could select imdb.com, imdb.de, imdb.fr, imdb.it, imdb.es or a few more

Then only one thing need to be done:

  • if the preferred importer does find a movie with title, description,
directors, actors aso, it will import THIS data
  • if it cant find a description, stick to imdb.com ...

I guess this will make all foreign users quite happy to have the description and the title in their own language ...

This will maybe even help the imdb project, because people will enter films and their descriptions into the imdb just to have them displayed in their own language via sapphire ;o)

It's not really the Mac way to do things and would be a hacky change. Applications with support for multiple languages should follow the  internationalisation guidelines and that's what Sapphire does.

I have the same issue with switching between English (me) and French (everyone). My solution is to have separate user accounts with different language settings. It also means I can have content on my account that I don't want others to watch (ref #290).

If Sapphire were to add internationalisation in another way it would be a case of reinventing the wheel.

Also, Sapphire populates it's database with the data from one site. If Sapphire populated from imdb.de and you switched to English, your film descriptions would still be in German. For this reason, importing your data in different accounts under different languages would keep everything in the expected language.

I'm working on this at the moment. Patience please :)

The German, French, Spanish and Italian IMDb sites are quite poor in terms of descriptions. Many are missing. The only data availabe are director, rating, release date, cast etc. Apart from release date that's data that looks the same regardless of your language.

Hopefully IMDb are working on this, otherwise support for other IMDb sites is not really useful.

Great to hear, that your working on it ! wow, cant wait (but do not like to hurry you) ...

your right, that only real blockbusters have a description in different languages, that why I though that there should be a fallback to imdb.com So, if the user selects imdb.de to be a preferred importer and there is NO description, the option should still fetch it from imdb.com. Surely that will mean two lookups and slow down the importing process, so my idea is, to add the option only to film menu itself, so anybody can play around, what information he likes.

Or, if there is a prefered language option in the settings menu, the full importer should really try to fetch the description from the foreign imdb and if there is none, still fetch it from imdb.com

What do you think, where is the best way to place it ?

Still interesting is to display the title in the preferred language, they should be all in the foreign imdb's

again, great to hear, thats this tool is really being developed. I love it that much ...

Kind regards, phade

maybe you could even skip the preferred option completely and stick to the "account" method. I see it now this way:

If the user sets MacOS to German, sapphire could:

  • present the interface in German (like it does, except for the Movies menu) see my translations unter http://appletv.nanopi.net/trac/ticket/338
  • if the language fits any other supported imdb, it could read title, date aso from imdb.de
  • if there IS a description in imdb.de, it could fetch this, if not, fetch it from imdb.com

That would be great!
