Always freezes at the same point in Import All Data

Description

Hi, ever since about the first or second import, Sapphire has been freezing around the 27th record when I select import all data (unfortunately not crashing so I haven't seen any console records or crash reports, although I looked). The 27th record was a file that used to have a long filename but then I renamed it Desperate.Housewives.S02E05.avi . Unfortunately I don't think it's the filename that's the problem, because when I delete the file altogether, Sapphire freezes on the 26th record. If I remove that, it freezes on the 25th, etc.

How do I know it's frozen? The cancel import button doesn't work, and I left it all night and it didn't unfreeze. I have to use opt-apple-esc to get out of front row and restart it.

On some other tickets I've seen some recommendations to delete app the information in the Sapphire Application Support directory, and I tried that, but it didn't help. I also tried reinstalling sapphire, and that didn't help either. Is there another database stored somewhere that I should delete? The strange thing is that it worked once before it started not working, and the file it freezes on isn't new, and it doesn't seem to matter much which file it is that it freezes on, but it's always at the same point in the process. That makes me suspect a database problem, but I'm not sure where the databases are other than in the application support directory.

BTW this was same problem on both b4.1 and b4.2.

Let me know what you think or if you want to send something. I'm addicted to sapphire now and can't live without it !

What is the next file? Often the display doesn't fully update when switching to the next file, so it could be the next file in the list instead of the current one.

Also, if you have the dev tools installed, launch /Developer/Applications/Performance\ Tools/Spin?\ Control.app then go freeze frontrow.

If you can't figure out which file, try moving half the files out of that dir. If it freezes, move half again; works move half of the half move out, back. Keep repeating until you know which file is doing it.

Okay, that took care of it. The next file was a partially downloaded file which was the next in the series of desperate housewives. It was only 32k, maybe you are scanning the file header for something and it was incomplete? Probably good if it can cope with a partial file header for people who use bittorrent and download into their movies directory (actually I normally have it only move the file when it's complete, but appearently these files were from before I changed that)

I attached the file that crashed it. By the way, thanks for all your hard work and excellent support. Sapphire is the most wonderful thing to ever happen to my mac mini and my tv.

  • status changed from new to closed
  • resolution set to fixed

This is an issue with Perian freezing on the file. The next version of Sapphire does this import in the background, so it will no longer freeze the UI, but it will stop importing file data upon hitting that file. Suboptimal, yes, but at least it is still usable.

Closing since it is still usable in the next release and I committed the change to perian to fix:  http://trac.perian.org/changeset/759
